2D renderstyle test

Exploring some new techniques to render in a 2D kinda style. The textures are painted in photoshop and mapped on the simple cylinders just for testing. Very curious how this style will work when I put these kind of textures on a character.

Only one light is used for the shadowlayer. No lights used in the scene. Did Some additional adjustments in Photoshop to enhance the contrast.

great stuff Joost? I guess you have seen the latest Supinfocom short "Meet Buck" and "Salesman Pete". The first guys who have started with this way of working were probably Aardman with the Pierce Sisters.

I haven't dug into that yet but that is really exciting

Hey Olivier, thanks man. Yes this is really exciting to explore some more! And those examples you mentioned inspired me indeed. Also Asterokid's "galactic mail" http://vimeo.com/2251254. They used that same kind of style but only with flat colors in 2008.

I have been experimenting with 2D style and lights in Maya but was never satisfied with the results.
With using no lights and lot's of detail in the painted textures it suddenly open's a whole new direction. What also blew me away last week was That backwater Gospel short from the animation workshop. They used the same sort of technique. http://www.animwork.dk/en/bachelor_films_2011.asp.

Thats quite amazing, and the use of simple lighting but great textures spells out tons of potential, love it!
